Rahman + Oscars = CRAP!

“The success of Slumdog Millionaire at Oscar awards has made Indians ecstatic with joy and people all over the country have been celebrating this extraordinary achievement.”

“For Indians staying abroad, it is a matter of immense pride when something that represents India gets recognition at such a global scale.”

Why are we so proud?
How does this make A. R. Rahman any better than what he already is? These reactions to A. R. Rahman’s success at the Oscars are indications of a nation struggling to revive its self esteem. Perhaps our self esteem as a nation has finally reached its nadir in the aftermath of the British colonial rule. Hence, we perpetually feel the need to identify with our former colonizers. Modern day "multiculturalism" rejects most of the intellectual heritage of that represents the Indian ethos in exchange for a pseudo culture that predominantly mimics the west.

The 13 1/2 inch tin and copper statuette of a naked, but anatomically featureless dude holding a sword to shield his genitals awarded to Rahman should not be mistaken as approbation. We should not let them fasten their fetters upon us. Rahman should be praised for his preeminence, not for the Oscar that he received for working on an English feature film.
