Publish Or Else!

Or else what? I am not fond of the fact that I am part of a community that judges its peers by the number of refereed publications they have. It isn’t surprising that scientists (read nerds) came up with a system that normal people cannot possibly understand or be interested in. Normal people are not interested in citation numbers (the nerd equivalent of “likes”).

Upon first sight it looks as if the objective is to make a contribution to the universal body of knowledge and help the advancement of science. But then the naïve ones don’t realize that the whole system is like the matrix. It’s designed to trick you into helping it preserve itself.

Journals keep scientists occupied. Being occupied makes them feel important. Every paper that is published is judged primarily by the entertainment value it will provide for other scientists. The scientists prefer to call this process “peer review”. When more people “like” (cite) your “stuff” (publications) you are “cool” (well recognized)… it’s like being in high school actually!

It baffles me as to how we draw references to 'The Matrix' as if it were real. What happened to the old look of the page?

The look is fine, but arrange the page elements properly. If you feel you don need anything just remove it. Getting a new template and tweaking it is work you can do without.
